The American fast-food chain Steak 'n Shake has reported a significant surge in sales, achieving double-digit growth after implementing two major ingredient overhauls: replacing industrial seed oils with beef tallow for frying and switching its burgers to 100% grass-fed and grass-finished beef.

According to data highlighted by the Localize app, the transition to grass-fed beef was rolled out nationwide across every restaurant in June. While the rebranding and focus on premium ingredients appear to be resonating with customers, the company's chairman noted that these improvements have not yet solved broader operational difficulties, as the chain continues to close underperforming locations.

The shift represents a substantial sourcing and branding commitment, especially given the scale of a national chain. Market analysts observe that the sales bump serves as a clear signal that mainstream consumers are increasingly prioritising ingredient quality and transparency. Some commenters on social media have even urged the chain to extend this 'cleaner' food messaging to the rest of its menu.

Steak 'n Shake is not alone in its pursuit of sustainability and ingredient transparency. Other industry giants are also testing new operational models; McDonald's is exploring methods to reduce plastic use, Taco Time Northwest has moved toward compostable disposables, and Wendy's has partnered with community solar initiatives to power over 100 of its U.S. stores. The reaction to Steak 'n Shake's ingredient pivot suggests that large brands can successfully respond to shifting consumer demands regarding the types of fats and oils used in food preparation.
