The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has initiated a significant two-year field trial of nanotechnology in coconut cultivation, following the signing of an agreement with Japanese conglomerate Mitsui. The collaboration, finalized on July 27 after eight months of negotiations, aims to evaluate the efficacy of this advanced technology in boosting coconut yields and improving the overall health of coconut trees across the Philippines.
According to a statement from the Department of Agriculture (DA), Mitsui will supply its proprietary nano-formulated nutrient technology for the project. In return, the PCA is tasked with identifying appropriate trial sites and providing comprehensive technical support throughout the duration of the field tests.
Distinct from conventional fertilizers that are typically applied to the soil, this innovative nanotechnology involves microscopic nutrient capsules injected directly into the tree trunks. This method promises significantly more efficient nutrient absorption by the trees, as highlighted by the DA. The department also noted that similar technology has already demonstrated success in oil palm plantations, suggesting its potential applicability to other tree crops.
PCA Administrator and CEO Dexter Buted expressed optimism about the venture, stating, 'This partnership opens the door to innovations that could transform coconut farming by improving productivity, strengthening tree health, and making our farms more resilient.' He further emphasized the economic benefits, adding, 'If the technology proves effective, it can help our coconut farmers produce more with fewer inputs while making the industry more globally competitive.'
This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s broader vision for the country's coconut industry. In his fifth State of the Nation Address, the President outlined a goal to plant 100 million coconut trees by 2028. He reported that 18 million coconut trees have already been planted under his administration.
Recent data from the Philippine Statistics Authority indicates a slight increase in coconut production, reaching 14.506 million metric tons in 2025, up from 14.500 million metric tons recorded in 2024. This new technological push could contribute further to this growth.
