Morocco Olive Crisis: Falling Prices and High Stocks Threaten Producer Margins

Moroccan olive farmers are facing a severe marketing crisis as the harvest season begins, with challenges shifting from production hurdles to a lack of buyers and intermediaries. Major production hubs including Taounate, Rehamna, Sidi Bouathman, and Kelaat Sraghna are reporting stagnant commercial activity despite a viable crop, raising concerns over significant financial losses for growers.

Industry data suggests that high carryover stocks of olive oil from the previous season remain in mills, significantly dampening demand for the new harvest. This market saturation has triggered a dramatic price correction; olive oil prices have plummeted from historical highs of 120 MAD per litre during drought years to approximately 40 MAD today. Crucially, production costs have not followed this downward trend, with daily wages for harvest labor ranging between 170 and 300 MAD, exacerbated by high fuel and agricultural input costs.

This disconnect between production overheads and market value forces producers into a precarious position: either harvest and sell at a loss or leave the fruit on trees, risking spoilage and quality degradation. Small-scale farmers, who rely on the annual harvest for essential liquidity, are the most vulnerable. The current situation underscores the urgent need for a more resilient marketing infrastructure capable of absorbing supply fluctuations and protecting the economic viability of Morocco's olive oil sector.
