A court in Nigeria has sentenced a man, identified as Okoye, to five years of imprisonment for his involvement in the illicit manufacturing and distribution of counterfeit olive oil in Aba, Abia State. The conviction follows a rigorous enforcement operation conducted by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
The enforcement action took place in April 2026, when NAFDAC officials uncovered a facility dedicated to the illegal production and distribution of fake Goya olive oil. During the raid, Okoye was apprehended, and authorities seized various samples of the fraudulent products. These samples were subsequently subjected to comprehensive laboratory analysis at the agency's facilities, with the findings serving as pivotal evidence during the investigation and subsequent prosecution.
This legal victory for regulators comes several months after NAFDAC issued a public health warning regarding the circulation of adulterated Goya olive oil. The agency noted that the counterfeit goods were being packaged in plastic bottles and marketed to consumers as authentic imported products. The sentencing underscores the commitment of Nigerian authorities to safeguarding food quality and protecting the integrity of established brands within the edible oils market.
