Malaysia has officially launched its transition from the B10 biodiesel blending mandate to B15, marking a significant step in the country's strategy to boost domestic palm oil consumption, reduce fossil fuel dependence, and support the long-term sustainability of its plantation sector.

Under the B15 mandate, all diesel fuel sold in peninsular Malaysia must contain at least 15% palm oil-based fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) biodiesel, up from the previous 10% requirement. The transition was implemented without any increase in retail diesel pump prices, with the Malaysian government absorbing the additional cost differential between biodiesel and petroleum diesel through its existing fuel subsidy mechanism.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board estimated that the upgrade from B10 to B15 would increase domestic palm oil demand for biodiesel by approximately 500,000 metric tonnes per year, providing meaningful additional demand support for the commodity at a time when export demand has been subject to various headwinds.

Vehicle and equipment manufacturers operating in Malaysia confirmed that modern diesel engines are fully compatible with B15 biodiesel without any modifications, allaying consumer concerns about potential performance or warranty implications of the higher blend level.

The move has been positively received by the plantation industry, with palm oil producers and processors viewing it as a significant long-term demand anchor that reduces the sector's dependence on more volatile export markets. Environmental groups have also acknowledged the climate benefits of higher biodiesel blending, though some have called for accelerated action on deforestation and land use change within the sector.
