Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK) has elevated its chief operating officer, Lee Jia Zhang, to the position of chief executive officer, formalising a long-anticipated leadership succession from his father, executive chairman Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian.
Jia Zhang will officially take over the CEO role on 1 October. The appointment, embedded in the group's planned leadership transition framework, is designed to preserve continuity across KLK's strategic direction and day-to-day operations.
Oi Hian led KLK as CEO for more than three decades. He assumed the dual role of group chairman and CEO in 1993, stepped down as chairman in 2008 while retaining the CEO post until February 2024, and was subsequently redesignated executive chairman. Since then, Jia Zhang has continued to oversee operational matters as COO.
Jia Zhang first joined KLK in 2010 and has since held leadership positions spanning the group's plantation, oleochemical, refinery, property and corporate divisions. He joined the KLK board as an executive director in May 2018 and was elevated to COO in October 2021. He previously served as managing director of Palm-Oleo Sdn Bhd and as CEO of KLK OLEO.
Prior to joining KLK, Jia Zhang held audit positions at Ernst & Young in the United Kingdom and at KPMG in Kuala Lumpur. His broader industry involvement includes serving as chairman of the Asean Oleochemical Manufacturers Group, secretary and council member of the Malaysian Palm Oil Association, and board member of the Malaysian Palm Oil Council.
He holds a master's degree with honours in chemical engineering from Imperial College London and is a chartered accountant and member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland.
The appointment caps a succession that has been shaped over several years, with Jia Zhang progressively taking on additional operational responsibility within the group.
Oi Hian said the board was confident that his successor would build on KLK's existing foundations and support its long-term growth ambitions.
The transition comes as KLK continues to position itself as a diversified agri-based organisation spanning plantations, oleochemicals, property and related businesses.
