Argentina has displaced Ukraine as the leading supplier of sunflower oil to India — the world's largest vegetable oil importer — for the first time in several years, in a significant shift in global trade flows driven by a combination of logistical disruptions and competitive pricing.
Argentine sunflower oil has been offered to Indian importers at highly competitive prices following a bumper 2025/26 harvest season that produced near-record sunflower seed yields across the country's key growing provinces. The resulting surplus of crushed sunflower oil has been aggressively marketed to Asian buyers as Argentine exporters seek to maximize foreign currency earnings.
The displacement of Ukrainian sunflower oil from India's import mix reflects the ongoing disruption to Ukrainian agricultural exports caused by Russian attacks on Black Sea port infrastructure. The damage to storage facilities and the security risks associated with vessel operations in and around Ukrainian ports have driven up insurance premiums and logistics costs for Ukrainian sunflower oil, making it less competitive on a delivered-cost basis compared to South American alternatives.
Indian importers noted that Argentine sunflower oil has demonstrated reliable delivery performance and consistent quality, easing any concerns about switching from their traditional Ukrainian supplier base. Several Indian cooking oil brands have indicated they are reviewing their longer-term supplier diversification strategies in light of the persistent uncertainty affecting Ukrainian supplies.
For Argentina, the successful penetration of the Indian sunflower oil market represents a significant commercial achievement and underscores the country's growing role as a major global supplier of vegetable oils beyond its traditional soybean oil stronghold.
