Among the Saint Laurent gowns and short Gianni Versace pieces Bella Hadid wore at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, one look stood out: a dress by Michael & Hushi made from traditional keffiyeh fabric. The model described the outfit at the time as a tribute to designers who have supported the Palestinian cause, drawing attention to the continued bloodshed in Gaza. She said: "Although I have to keep working amid this horror, wearing our culture makes me a proud Palestinian. I want the world to keep seeing Palestine wherever we go."

Hadid has kept up this mission, later wearing a knitted top with a tied neckline designed by Palestinian designer Rima Al-Banna, founder of the Reem Ami label, decorated with hand-drawn motifs depicting "tatreez" embroidery, a horse and cart, and an olive oil tin – all familiar symbols in Palestinian culture – while promoting her new fragrance from the brand Orebella, titled Eternal Roots, on Instagram. She wrote: "[It's] a reminder that Eternal Roots isn't just a name, it's a way of life. It's about protecting the threads that tie us to our families, our heritage, our truth. It's about standing up for what matters, even when it isn't easy to talk about." And just last week, her sister Alana Hadid attended Niclas Skovgaard's Spring/Summer 2026 show at Copenhagen Fashion Week wearing a bespoke Mailliw dress made from the symbolic keffiyeh fabric.

Bella and Alana's father, Mohamed Hadid, was born in Nazareth in 1948, six months after the state of Israel was declared by Jewish leaders in Palestine. Few people in their field – and fewer still with this level of influence – have spoken as openly about the brutal suffering endured by Palestinians there. It is also refreshing to see the fashion world, often dismissed as frivolous and superficial, used as a platform to amplify Palestinian rights. Hadid told British Vogue in its May 2025 issue: "Palestine, to me, is what fills my heart. We are human beings on this earth, and clearly we will spend the rest of our lives striving for peace."
