Seed Oil Free Alliance launches search tool for certified products and restaurants

The Seed Oil Free Alliance in the United States has launched a new web page to help consumers find products, restaurants and wholesalers certified as free of seed oils.

Seed oils include canola, corn, cottonseed, grapeseed, rice bran, safflower, soybean and sunflower oils.

The alliance said on 6 May that more than 40 brands have earned its "Seed Oil Free" seal after meeting strict quality standards for manufacturing their products without seed oils. These requirements include selecting fats and oils under rigorous purity protocols, auditing compound ingredients to detect any hidden oils, and complying with detailed verification procedures.

Certified brands include plant-based coconut milk from Vita Coco, nut-based meals from Daily Crunch, and cooking oil from Zero Acre Farms.

The new search page allows consumers to browse certified products, restaurants and wholesalers across several categories, including:

  • Olive oil, avocado oil and cooking oils
  • Plant-based milks
  • Cookies, biscuits and potato chips
  • Hummus and sauces
  • Chicken pieces and ready-made meats
  • Nut mixes and nut butters
  • Protein and collagen bars
  • Ice cream and frozen desserts
  • Skincare products
  • Ready meals and restaurant-served food

The alliance said all foods carrying the "Seed Oil Free" seal – launched in July 2024 – undergo laboratory testing to confirm they are completely free of seed oils, including soybean, corn and canola oil.

Permitted oils and fats include olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, butter, and other refined animal fats. Certified companies and restaurants can use the seal on product packaging, menus and marketing materials.

The launch of the search page comes as part of a broader campaign against seed oils, driven by claims from US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that seed oils cause chronic disease.

The alliance noted that a recent national survey found that 28% of Americans avoid refined seed oils, and that many companies are seeking to remove them from their products and supply chains to meet rising demand.

However, around a third of Americans believe there is insufficient evidence to support negative claims about seed oils, and the American Heart Association sees no reason to avoid them, according to a report published on 19 May on the Green Queen website.
