The International Olive Council (IOC), the intergovernmental body representing global olive producers, has officially approved and co-funded the 'Olive Knowledge Initiative 2026 – Health Benefits Awareness for Olive Oil and Table Olives.' This strategic educational project was developed by the Scientific Society of Olive Encyclopaedists (4E).

The program is designed with a clear mission: to translate complex scientific knowledge into accessible information for consumers at the point of decision-making—whether at home, in the supermarket, or in the dining room. It aims to educate the public on the fundamental health advantages of olive consumption, providing clarity on sensory attributes such as fruitiness, pungency, and bitterness, while teaching consumers how to interpret labels to select high-quality table olive grades.

Scheduled to run from November to early December 2026, 4E will coordinate a series of public awareness events in partnership with municipalities across Greece's Attica region and various academic institutions. These sessions will feature scientific experts explaining the Mediterranean diet, guided tasting workshops to identify the characteristics of premium extra virgin olive oil, and practical guidance on proper storage and culinary applications.

A complimentary bilingual consumer guide will be provided to all participants and hosted on the 4E website. While two events will target university students and nutrition professionals, the rest are open to the general public free of charge. The initiative maintains a strictly scientific and educational focus, independent of any commercial brand promotion.

Representatives from 4E noted that the initiative is particularly timely as it seeks to support the livelihoods of olive growers during periods of falling market prices by strengthening consumer demand through knowledge. They emphasized that understanding the product is the most effective way to support the primary sector.

Established in 2018, the Scientific Society of Olive Encyclopaedists (4E) consists of 82 specialists, including agronomists, chemists, and medical professionals. Its mission is to safeguard olive cultivation by disseminating scientific data across the industry. The IOC Executive Secretariat, while co-funding the initiative, clarifies that the content remains the sole responsibility of 4E.
