The International Olive Council (IOC) has released its June/July 2025 report, analysing updated data on international olive oil trade, origin prices, import and export trends, and the performance of key markets such as Brazil for the 2024/2025 season. As the global olive sector awaits initial production estimates for the upcoming season, prices remain relatively stable.

Brazil: A Promising Import Market

Brazil remains one of the world's leading olive oil import markets, accounting for an average of 9% of global imports and 3.1% of global consumption, despite relatively low per capita consumption (0.4 kg per season). Between the 2015/2016 and 2021/2022 seasons, Brazil recorded sustained growth, although imports fell by 11% in the 2023/2024 season to 81,000 tonnes, mainly due to higher global prices.

Portugal remains Brazil's leading supplier, holding a 57% share of the market, even though Portuguese exports also declined by 14% year-on-year. By grade, ordinary virgin olive oil accounted for 85.9% of Brazilian imports, extra virgin olive oil for 13.5%, and olive pomace oil for 0.6%.

EU-Brazil Trade

The European Union exports an average of 79,000 tonnes of olive oil to Brazil each year, representing 11% of its extra-EU exports and valued at an estimated €403 million. In the first eight months of the season (October to May 2025), 42,024 tonnes were shipped, worth €281 million, of which 84% was extra virgin olive oil.
In the 2022/2023 season, the volume of EU exports to Brazil fell by 19.4%, even as their value rose by 12.1% on the back of higher prices. This season, export value has risen by 44.9% year-on-year.

Extra-EU Exports Rise Despite Lower Unit Values

In May 2025, EU countries exported 74,914 tonnes of olive oil outside the bloc, up 36.1% year-on-year and 7.5% month-on-month. Extra virgin olive oil accounted for 74.6% of this volume (55,862 tonnes). The average unit value stood at €554 per 100 kg, down 42.4% year-on-year and 4.1% lower than in April, continuing the downward trend that began in March 2024.

Global Imports Recover

From October 2024 to May 2025, olive oil imports in key markets rose by 6.4% compared with the same period of the previous season. Demand recovered notably in Australia, Canada, China and the United States, while Brazil increased its purchases by 4.6% year-on-year in May alone.
Brazil is also one of the largest importers of Egyptian table olives, and, as noted in a previous report, serves as a gateway for high-quality Egyptian olive oil, opening up a promising market for Egyptian olive oil exports.
