Turkey is poised to record its highest olive production in history during the upcoming season, with forecasts suggesting a total yield of 3.8 million tons. This unprecedented figure, if realized, would mark a milestone since the founding of the Republic. Ali Yıldız, Chairman of the Marmarabirlik Union, confirmed that crop estimation committees have finalized their nationwide assessment, covering both table olives and oil-extraction varieties.
To manage this bumper crop, Marmarabirlik plans to procure approximately 60,000 tons from producers, representing one of the largest purchase volumes in its history. Yıldız emphasized that the union's goal is to ensure farmers receive fair returns for their labor, calling for synchronized action between cooperatives and state institutions to prevent the production surplus from triggering a market crisis.
Addressing domestic market dynamics, Yıldız noted that Turkey's per capita olive oil consumption remains low at around 2kg annually. He advocated for increasing this rate to 4–6kg to absorb domestic production and stabilize the market. In line with this, the union is modernizing its production facilities and enhancing awareness campaigns, particularly focusing on traditional processing methods like natural fermentation and stone-pressed salting.
However, the industry faces significant headwinds, primarily from product adulteration and rising input costs. Yıldız urged authorities to impose stricter penalties and higher fines for counterfeit olive oil to safeguard the sector's integrity. He also highlighted the pressure of increasing labor and fuel costs on farmers, stressing the need for sustained support to maintain production stability.
In a strategic move to diversify its portfolio, Marmarabirlik has launched an innovative breakfast cream made from hazelnuts, cocoa, and olive oil. This additive-free product targets health-conscious younger consumers and is already available at 4,000 retail points across Turkey. The initiative reflects the union's commitment to developing high-value specialized products to meet evolving consumer preferences.
