Former Petroleum Minister Eng. Osama Kamal has said that Egypt's move towards producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil represents a pivotal and important step for the country's energy sector.
Environmental And Economic ViabilitySpeaking in a phone interview with presenter Karima Awad on the programme "Hadith Al Qahira" on Al Qahira Wal Nas TV, Kamal outlined the following points:
- Waste management: Waste represents a huge environmental burden, and the current global trend focuses on recycling not just as an environmental solution but as a means of recovering the value of materials and reusing them.
- Feasibility studies: The former minister stressed the need for rigorous economic feasibility studies for sustainable fuel projects, covering all aspects from production volume to financing mechanisms and identifying buyers, in order to ensure the project's continuity and success.
Success Factors In EgyptKamal pointed to the presence of factors that would support the project's success in Egypt, most notably:
- Abundant raw material: Egypt has large quantities of used cooking oil, giving the project strong economic viability.
- Technical expertise: The company contracted by Egypt holds a prior licence and documented practical experience in this specialised field.
- Market demand: There is a strong, open local and global market for this type of clean fuel.
He concluded by predicting that this project would be a distinguished addition to Egypt's path in the field of sustainable energy.
