In just one year, the average shelf price per litre in supermarkets fell from €9.56 to €5.78
February saw olive oil return in force to Spanish shopping baskets, particularly compared with the same month a year earlier. According to Olimerca, citing the latest data published by NielsenIQ, the annual price on large retail shelves — which had been falling for several months — recorded its steepest drop yet in February, down as much as 40%. Indeed, compared with the average price per litre of around €9.56 in February 2024, the figure fell to €5.78 in February this year.
These figures have naturally given a strong boost to olive oil consumption, which rose by 48% over the same period. Data on other vegetable oils on the market also confirm that olive oil remains the preferred choice among Spaniards. As olive oil prices have fallen, a number of households have been abandoning the alternative oils they had previously turned to in order to manage their monthly budgets. Notably, sunflower oil sales fell by 8% in February 2025, while sales of other oils dropped by nearly 50%.
This study on oil consumption forms part of a broader review of Spanish households' shopping baskets in a report covering the period from February 2024 to February 2025. In terms of the food sector, the report highlights a 1.1% rise in sales volume and a 3.0% increase in value. Beverages were the only category to see a decline, down 2.1% in both volume and value.
