A Euronews report says Spain's olive oil industry, which accounts for half of global output, is being targeted by fake news on social media, raising concerns over the reputation of this vital sector.
The circulating claims centre on two main points: first, that Spanish olive oil is being blended with quantities of Moroccan oil, and second, that authorities are preparing to recall products from the market. In this context, the report cited a categorical denial from industry experts, who confirmed that domestic production processes do not involve any ingredients imported from Morocco. They also explained that a product recall remains only a theoretical scenario linked to the existence of a massive production surplus, which does not reflect the current reality.
The danger of such rumours lies in the damage they inflict on a strategic sector that generates 3.2 billion euros annually and provides around 42,000 jobs, adding further pressure at a time when the industry already faces challenges including climate volatility, rising production costs and international competition.
