Datuk Chan Foong Hin, Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said Malaysia is promoting high-value palm oil derivatives such as red palm oil, palm stearin, and palm-based ice cream powder in global markets.

He added that joint research and development initiatives are underway with food companies in Sichuan and Chongqing, China, targeting the use of these products in hot pot soup bases, spicy snacks, and sustainable personal-care products.

He said in a statement that while China pursues its vision of a shared future for humanity, Malaysia is proud to work alongside it, using palm oil as a bridge to support regional green growth and sustainable development.

The statement followed the China (Chongqing)-Malaysia Industrial Cooperation Dialogue, which was held successfully in Chongqing last Thursday with a strong focus on expanding cooperation in palm oil trade, technological innovation, and sustainable supply-chain development.

The dialogue was one of the highlights of the Seventh Western China International Fair for Investment and Trade (WCIFIT), underscoring Chongqing’s strategic role in the Malaysia-China green value chain.

More than 40 representatives from leading companies in food manufacturing, seasonings, personal care, and oil refining attended the event for business matching and targeted discussions.

In his keynote speech, Chan highlighted growing global momentum toward green development and the potential role of palm oil as a vital bridge for regional cooperation.

He said Malaysia aims to leverage Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification, one of the world’s leading sustainability standards, to strengthen institutional links with China in areas such as carbon labeling, biofuels, and green materials.

He said that together, both sides can build a supply network that is not only efficient and innovative, but also environmentally responsible.

He also pointed to the huge market potential in western China, with Chongqing serving as a key hub in the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor.

This logistics corridor allows Malaysian palm oil imports to reach inland provinces such as Sichuan, Guizhou, and Shaanxi efficiently through the Qinzhou Port–Chongqing route.

Chan announced that the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) signed a memorandum of understanding with New Land-Sea Corridor Operation Co Ltd to accelerate development of a strategic palm oil supply chain covering western China.

Malaysia is also cooperating with Chongqing Jiaotong University to develop palm oil-derived polyurethane acrylate for use in anti-corrosion coatings, expanding the application of palm-based oleochemicals in China’s industrial sector.

The dialogue concluded with a high-level roundtable titled “The Future of China’s Palm Oil Industry amid Global Oils and Fats Trends,” featuring in-depth discussion on trade trends, sustainability certification, technological innovation, and regulatory frameworks.

The statement concluded that the successful industry dialogue not only strengthened Malaysia-China cooperation in the palm oil value chain, but also added new momentum toward building a green, efficient, and mutually beneficial regional supply network.
