The Russian city of Orel has witnessed a major fire at the «Orelmaslo» plant, one of the most prominent food industry enterprises in Central Russia. The facility specializes in the deep processing of oilseeds, serving as a critical hub for vegetable oil production and the supply of feed ingredients for the agricultural sector.
Orelmaslo is primarily focused on the extraction and refining of sunflower and rapeseed oils, alongside the production of seed meal and pellets used in animal feed. Operating since the late 19th century, the plant underwent a significant modernization program in 2020, bringing its annual processing capacity to over 400,000 tons of raw materials through advanced extraction technologies.
The company stands as a strategic exporter for the Oryol region, producing hundreds of thousands of tons of finished products annually. Its market reach extends beyond the Russian domestic market to key international destinations, including the Middle East, Central Asia, and China, making it a vital player in the global edible oil trade.
This incident coincides with reports of intensified drone strikes targeting Russian industrial infrastructure. On the night of September 20, the Moscow Oil Refinery (Gazprom Neft-MNPZ) in the Kapotnya district was also hit, resulting in a large-scale fire at one of the Russian oil industry's key facilities, according to statements from the Ukrainian General Staff regarding the recent wave of strikes on industrial assets.
