India's Edible Oil Imports Soar to 10-Month Peak in July Ahead of Festive Season

India's edible oil imports surged significantly in July, reaching a 10-month high of 1.49 million tonnes. This represents a 34% increase month-on-month, driven primarily by refiners accelerating purchases to replenish inventories in anticipation of the crucial upcoming festival season.

Industry estimates indicate a sharp rise across key oil types. Palm oil imports saw a 50% jump from June, reaching 733,000 tonnes in July, marking a five-month high. Soyoil imports climbed 32% to 501,000 tonnes, their highest in seven months, while sunflower oil shipments also rose 4% to 253,000 tonnes.

This surge in imports follows a period of reduced domestic stocks due to lower purchases in previous months. Refiners are now actively rebuilding their inventories to meet the expected increase in edible oil consumption during India's festival season, which typically runs from August to November. Sandeep Bajoria, CEO of Mumbai-based vegetable oil brokerage Sunvin Group, affirmed that refiners are 'replenishing stocks to meet the expected seasonal demand.'

Rajesh Patel, managing partner at Rajkot-based GGN Research, noted that soyoil imports could potentially exceed 500,000 tonnes in both August and September. He attributed this sustained high demand to competitive international prices for soyoil and reduced domestic crushing of rapeseed and soybeans.

India sources its palm oil primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. Soyoil and sunflower oil are largely imported from Argentina, Brazil, Russia, and Ukraine.

These estimates do not include duty-free edible oil shipments entering India by land from neighboring Nepal. The official import data for July from the Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) is expected to be released by mid-August.

The substantial increase in Indian purchases is anticipated to offer support to global edible oil markets. This could help major producing nations such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Argentina reduce their inventories and potentially bolster benchmark palm oil and soyoil futures prices.
