The Hayel Saeed Anam & Co. Group is considered one of the oldest and largest economic and family conglomerates in the Arab world. Its history spans over 85 years of leadership and excellence, shaping an inspiring success story that evolved from a small retail store in Aden into a multinational industrial and commercial empire whose operations span across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

In an engaging and comprehensive investment interview, Mr. Muneer Ahmed Hayel Saeed—Chairman of ARMA Group and Managing Director of Hayel Saeed Anam & Co. Group operations in Egypt With Hazem Sherif, Editor-in-Chief of Al Mal Newspaper —highlighted key milestones of this rich history. He reviewed the strategic vision for growth and investment expansion, with a special focus on the edible oils, fats, and food processing sectors in the Egyptian market.

From a 1938 Aden Store to Global Industrial Expansion

Mr. Muneer Hayel Saeed (representing the third generation of family leadership) explained that the initial seed of the group was planted in 1938 by four founding brothers and grandfathers through a small retail store measuring no more than 4×4 meters in the city of Aden. Operations quickly expanded through retail growth and securing international agencies for staple commodities.

Following political changes and nationalization policies in South Yemen in the late 1960s, the group shifted its investments northward to the Taiz region. In 1970, it marked its first entry into the industrial sector by establishing a biscuit manufacturing factory (backed today by over 55 years of expertise in this field). Industrial footprint later expanded to include dairy products, edible oils and fats, flour mills, sugar, and even cement manufacturing and maritime services.

In the late 1970s, to safeguard and diversify its investments, the group pursued international expansion by initiating commercial operations in Dubai, followed by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Malaysia, Indonesia, the UK, Kenya, and other markets.

Building Leadership Talent and Family Discipline

The interview touched upon the philosophy of upbringing and work within the Hayel Saeed Anam family. Mr. Muneer noted that members of the second and third generations were raised with strict discipline. During their middle school, high school, and university summer breaks, they were assigned to hands-on field positions across factories and warehouses to learn from entry-level roles and interact directly with workers, building teamwork spirit before assuming executive positions.

After graduating with a degree in Business Administration from California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) in 1985, Mr. Muneer progressed through various leadership positions—starting as Deputy General Manager at the Ghee and Soap Company, then General Manager across other industrial entities, later as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the global group, and eventually leading direct executive operations in Egypt.

Edible Oils & Fats Sector: ARMA Group's Market Leadership in Egypt

ARMA Group serves as the primary engine for the group's investments in Egypt since entering the market in 1992, with edible oils and fats forming the core of these operations:

  • Significant Production Surge: ARMA launched its facilities in 1992 with a daily capacity of 300 tons of oils and ghee and a workforce of 100 employees. By 2026, daily production capacity reached 2,600 tons, supported by over 7,500 employees and workers.
  • Market Leadership: The group holds the No. 1 position in the edible oils and ghee (shortening/muslee) industry in the Egyptian market, driven by brand equity built on consumer trust across diverse socioeconomic segments.
  • Flagship Brands:
    • Crystal: The premium flagship brand in edible oils and ghee.
    • El Hanim, Mumtaz, and Qalya: Leading brands catering to varied consumer segments and culinary uses for blended cooking oils.
  • Continuous Expansion: Over the past three years alone, production capacity for oils and ghee expanded by 60% to meet growing market demand and ensure the supply of essential food commodities.

Mr. Muneer emphasized that during periods of economic volatility and currency fluctuations, the group's strategy relies on wisdom, national responsibility, market share retention, and prioritizing product availability for consumers as a matter of food security, even if temporary profit margins are impacted.

Industrial Integration: Packaging Materials & Strategic Acquisitions

The group's success extends beyond edible oils and fats to encompass supply chain integration and supporting food sectors:

  1. Corrugated Packaging Industry: The group operates advanced cardboard manufacturing plants that supply its own packaging needs and serve Egypt's agricultural and industrial sectors (ranking second in market share), with a 75% capacity expansion underway to launch by year-end.
  2. Acquisition of Biscomisr: The group recently acquired the iconic "Biscomisr" brand from an American investment fund, leveraging over 55 years of family experience in biscuit manufacturing. It successfully moved the company from loss-making to break-even while deploying investments to modernize production lines and innovate product offerings.
  3. Digital Distribution ("SilkLink"): Established in 2026, "SilkLink" specializes in digital distribution, connecting suppliers directly with retailers to accelerate fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distribution across Egypt.

Constitutional Values and Future Outlook

The group operates under a structured family constitution that governs business principles and ensures a strict, merit-based leadership succession plan. The group's five core values are: Honesty, Integrity, Sincerity, Perseverance, and Loyalty.

Mr. Muneer Ahmed Hayel Saeed concluded the interview by reiterating that Egypt represents a highly promising investment environment, benefiting from its geographic location, export access to Africa and global markets, and skilled labor force. He confirmed the group's ongoing evaluation of new expansion and investment opportunities within the food industry to strengthen its market position and contribute to national economic growth.
