
According to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), global vegetable oil production in the 2025/2026 season is expected to reach around 234.5 million tonnes, an increase of 6.7 million tonnes compared with the 2024/2025 season. This would allow production to fully cover forecast demand of 228.9 million tonnes.
According to a study by Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft, palm oil is expected to remain the world's most important vegetable oil in terms of both production and consumption, with global output projected to hit a record 80.4 million tonnes, up 2.2 million tonnes from the 2024/2025 season.
Indonesia leads global producers with output of 47.5 million tonnes, followed by Malaysia with 19.2 million tonnes, and then Thailand with around 3.4 million tonnes.
Soybean oil production is expected to rise by around 2.2 million tonnes to reach 70.8 million tonnes in the 2025/2026 season, potentially setting a new record.
China, the world's largest soybean importer, also tops the list as the largest producer of soybean oil, with output of 20.5 million tonnes, followed by the United States with just over 13.3 million tonnes.
Rapeseed oil production is forecast to increase by 617,000 tonnes to reach 34.5 million tonnes in the 2025/2026 season, reflecting steady growth in this segment.
Estimates point to sunflower oil production growing by around 1.8 million tonnes to reach 21.9 million tonnes, driven mainly by higher output in both Ukraine and the EU-27.
