According to the European Commission, the volume of palm oil imports into European Union countries has fallen by 18% since the start of the 2024/2025 season compared with the same period last year. The Commission notes that this downward trend clearly reflects the long-term impact of the EU's Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) on demand for palm oil.
Import volumes declined from all major supplying countries, with supplies from Indonesia down 24%, from Malaysia down 16%, and from Guatemala down 36%. Indonesia's share of total EU palm oil imports also slipped, falling from 33.4% last year to 31.1% this year.
The Indonesian Palm Oil Producers Association (GAPKI), the country's largest producer group, had earlier reported that Indonesia's palm oil exports would fall by 6.9% this year to 27.5 million tonnes.
