Brazilian Biodiesel Producers Squeezed by Record Feedstock Costs and Sluggish Demand

Brazil's biodiesel industry is grappling with a severe margin squeeze as producers face the dual challenge of high feedstock prices and tepid domestic demand. According to S&P Global Commodity Insights (Platts), contractual price differentials for biodiesel deliveries scheduled for November–December 2026 have dropped by more than R$30/m³ compared to the September–October period. This shift has pushed differentials into negative territory across all major Brazilian producing regions, further eroding industry profitability.

The most significant declines were observed in Mato Grosso, Brazil's premier hub for soybean and biodiesel production. In the Sorriso–Nova Mutum region, the price differential plummeted by R$70/m³, while the Cuiabá–Rondonópolis corridor recorded a drop of R$35/m³. In Rio Grande do Sul, the decrease was more moderate at R$9/m³. These market realities stand in stark contrast to the start of negotiations, where producers had initially aimed for price increases of approximately R$300/m³ to offset rising input costs.

While reduced soybean oil availability during the inter-harvest gap typically supports biodiesel prices toward year-end, seasonal factors have failed to counteract high inventory levels and weak consumption. Distributors are currently holding substantial outstanding volumes from previous contracts. Furthermore, diesel supply constraints linked to Petrobras quotas and import hurdles have limited overall blending demand, granting buyers significant bargaining power to negotiate lower premiums.

Currency volatility has added another layer of complexity. The depreciation of the Brazilian real against the US dollar has driven domestic soybean oil prices higher. Because the biodiesel pricing formula integrates CBOT soybean oil futures, the Paranaguá port basis, and exchange rates, these fluctuations impact production costs immediately. Although some firms attempted to raise spot market offers, stagnant trading activity meant most of these higher-priced offers failed to result in closed deals.

Market participants anticipate that these challenging conditions will persist into early 2027, a period when biodiesel demand traditionally softens. In response, some producers are already strategic about their exposure, limiting contracted delivery volumes to the specific amount of feedstock secured at earlier, lower prices to avoid the financial risk of purchasing expensive soybean oil in the current environment.
