Three of India's dominant state-owned energy giants have launched a joint procurement effort to secure 150 million litres of biodiesel, marking a significant step in the nation's transition toward sustainable fuels. Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation have collectively issued a tender for 150,000 kilolitres of B100 biodiesel, slated for delivery between November 2026 and January 2027.
Based on details published by the Economic Times, the oil marketing companies have established a base procurement price of Rs88 per litre for this tender. Prospective suppliers and industry participants are expected to submit their bids by the 7 November deadline. This massive procurement exercise is part of a broader mandate to increase the consumption of domestically manufactured biofuels, thereby lowering the national economy's heavy reliance on imported crude oil.
The initiative is closely aligned with the Indian government's overarching goals of improving energy security and decarbonizing the transport industry. Having already reached its 20% ethanol-to-petrol blending target ahead of schedule, India is now pivoting its regulatory focus toward scaling up biodiesel integration within the diesel fuel market. This shift is anticipated to generate substantial demand for renewable fuel producers across the country.
Industry experts note that this latest tender demonstrates a high level of confidence in the domestic biofuels supply chain. By providing clear demand signals, the move is likely to encourage further capital investment in biodiesel production facilities as India continues to pursue its long-term objectives for clean energy and climate resilience.
