Belize is taking a significant step toward domestic food security and economic retention with the official commencement of operations at the Green Valley Oil refinery in Spanish Lookout. This strategic facility is designed to reduce the nation's heavy reliance on imported edible oils, ensuring that more economic value remains within the country's borders.
Currently, the Belizean market, including both households and the hospitality sector, consumes more than six million liters of imported cooking oil every year. This import volume represents a significant economic drain, with an estimated annual value exceeding BZ$30 million. The new Green Valley Oil facility addresses this by offering a daily processing capacity of 12,000 liters. Once the refinery reaches its full operational scale, it is projected to satisfy up to 60% of the total national demand for cooking oil.
To support this burgeoning local industry, Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson announced that his ministry intends to request Cabinet approval for a tariff increase on imported cooking oils. The proposed protective measure aims to bolster the competitiveness of domestic products as Green Valley Oil’s output becomes increasingly available in local retail outlets. Any adjustment to the current tariff structure remains subject to final Cabinet deliberation and approval.
Beyond domestic supply, Green Valley Oil is already looking toward regional markets. Management confirmed that potential buyers in neighboring Guatemala and various CARICOM member states have expressed interest in the refinery's products. Minister Ferguson highlighted that this regional demand presents lucrative export opportunities for Belize, especially given the country's existing success in achieving self-sufficiency in soybean production.
