What does the future hold for olives in Egypt? This question was posed by an elderly farmer, sitting in the shade of an olive tree that might well be older than he was. He gazed at the sky, remarking, "The world has changed... and so has cultivation... even the trees we once depended on now demand a new approach." These words opened up a broad avenue for reflection.
What is the future of olive cultivation in Egypt in light of climate change and the ever-increasing challenges? The truth is, olives are more than just an agricultural crop; they are an integral part of Egypt's farming heritage, a tree held in special regard. While for many years the primary focus was on "table" olives (for pickling), interest in olive oil has recently surged, particularly due to its increasing health and economic value. However, the path to the future is not paved with roses.
1- Seasonal Labor Shortage One of the most significant obstacles currently facing farmers is the severe shortage of skilled labor for harvesting. Manual harvesting demands a large workforce, which drastically inflates production costs. As feddan productivity has declined in recent years, many workers have left the profession for other opportunities, resulting in higher costs, longer harvesting times, and reduced efficiency.
2- Over-cultivation of Pickling Varieties The past decade has seen a massive expansion in olive cultivation for pickling, leading to an excessive demand for manual labor. The available workforce is no longer sufficient or capable of completing the work to the required quality. More precisely, the acreage dedicated to pickling olive cultivation in Egypt has surpassed sustainable levels.
3- Climate Fluctuations This issue represents the greatest challenge that cannot be overlooked. The noticeable rise in temperatures, sudden drought spells, and the proliferation of pests have all directly impacted the productivity of traditional varieties. Trees that were once resilient now require different agricultural techniques and a greater capacity for adaptation.
Despite these challenges, the future outlook is not bleak; on the contrary, golden opportunities are on the horizon if the current situation is managed effectively:

Agricultural research in Egypt – specifically the Olive Research Department at the Agricultural Research Center – has successfully developed new genetic compositions resistant to drought and high temperatures. These varieties have demonstrated high efficiency under current conditions, opening up broad prospects for sustainability.

Through media awareness campaigns and stricter controls to combat commercial fraud, public trust in Egyptian products will be strongly restored.
The future of olive oil in Egypt represents a golden opportunity rather than just a challenge. By transitioning to high-density farming, relying on climate-resistant varieties, developing harvesting mechanisms, and raising community awareness, we can achieve a qualitative leap in this sector. This is not merely about preserving an agricultural heritage; it extends to building a sustainable economic future for farmers and enhancing the position of Egyptian olive oil in both local and international markets.
