Saeed was Saeed browsing in a natural products store, admiring the olive oil shelves filled with phrases like "organic," "biological," and "100% organic."

He stopped in front of one of the bottles, muttering, "Oh my... they all say 'organic,' but the prices are different. Which one is actually organic?"

At that moment, he spotted his friend Dr. Fares, an expert in food science, and approached him with a smile.

  • Dr. Fares: "You clearly look confused. What exactly are you looking for?"
  • Saeed: "I want real organic olive oil, but I don't understand the difference between 'organic' and '100% organic.' And are these products really pesticide-free?"

Dr. Fares smiled and said, "Let me explain it to you from the beginning, and you'll know how to choose the best oil."

What is Organic or Bio Olive Oil?

Organic olive oil is oil extracted from olives grown according to organic farming standards, which include:

  • No use of synthetic chemical pesticides.
  • No use of chemical fertilizers.
  • No use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
  • Reliance on natural fertilization and biological methods.
  • Full oversight by an official certification body (such as EU Organic or USDA Organic).

In other words, it's oil produced from an agricultural environment that is as natural as possible, with strict control over all production stages.

What is the difference between "organic" olive oil and "100% organic" olive oil?

Although the two terms seem similar, there's an important difference in the standards:

Aspect of Comparison 100% Organic Olive Oil (100% Organic) Organic Olive Oil (Organic)
Percentage of Organic Ingredients 100% At least 95%
Non-organic Ingredients Allowed No Yes, up to 5% (natural ingredients)
Level of Strictness Highest (★★★★★) High (★★★★☆)
Certification Full organic certification (such as USDA Organic) Organic certification (such as the EU organic leaf logo)

Important note:

In the case of olive oil (as a single-ingredient product), the difference is often in the stringency of testing rather than the composition, as the oil itself is typically 100% from olives. This does not apply to flavored olive oil or olive oil blended with other oils.

What are the permissible pesticide residue levels?

Even in organic farming, very small traces of pesticides may be present due to unintentional environmental contamination (air, water, soil). Therefore, international standards allow for very small percentages:

  • Organic Oil:
  • The maximum pesticide residue limit is 0.01 mg/kg (i.e., 0.01 parts per million).
  • 100% Organic Oil:
  • It undergoes more stringent testing, and some authorities require residues to be ≤ 0.005 mg/kg. The goal is to reach actual zero, but regulations allow for very small traces due to general environmental contamination.

Why isn't the limit exactly "zero"?

Because the environment itself may contain pesticide traces that are transferred through:

  • Air.
  • Groundwater.
  • Old soil.

Therefore, regulations allow for a very small percentage that is considered not to affect health.

Summary

  • Organic Olive Oil This means it is a natural product with at least 95% organic content, and pesticide residues not exceeding 0.01 mg/kg.
  • 100% Organic Olive Oil This means the product is entirely organic, with stricter standards, more precise testing, and residues often less than 0.005 mg/kg.
  • In single-ingredient products like olive oil, the difference often lies in the rigor of testing rather than in the composition.
  • The presence of very trace amounts of pesticides does not mean the oil is not organic; rather, it is natural due to the general environmental pollution around us.
