An innovative project in the circular supply chain involving one of the largest Italian cooperatives for the production of olives and olive oil. Here's how it was done!

“Circular Supply Chains” is an innovative regenerative agriculture project presented by Tersan Puglia, based in Modugno (Bari)It is a company that specializes in converting organic waste into biofertilizers and biogas (bio-methane) in order to convert waste from agricultural supply chains into valuable resources for crops, the environment, and soil regeneration.

The first example of a fully circular agricultural supply chain in olive farming came from Puglia thanks to cooperation with Assoprol Bari, one of the largest organizations of extra virgin olive oil producers in Europe, with 20,000 producers, 16 olive cooperatives and 53,000 hectares of cultivated land.

Project details:

The project includes the treatment of olive leaves accumulated during the harvesting stages to be mixed with other organic materials from sorted household waste in order to produce a biological fertilizer that is used in the same fields from which these leaves came, to recharge the olive trees themselves, enriching the soil with beneficial microorganisms.

In the initial phase of the project, Assoproli provided Tersan Puglia with about 40 tons of olive leaves, which were processed with other organic resources, and resulted in the production of 180 tons of biofertilizers, which were redistributed to 150 hectares of olive groves, thus avoiding the emission of 150 tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

CEO's speech:

Leonardo delle Follie, CEO of Tersan Puglia, said:
“This project is part of a path that started fifty years ago, aimed at transforming organic waste into precious resources for the benefit of the environment. It is a virtuous and endless recovery cycle that continues to create value, which in our case consists in the production of Bio Vegetable Biofertilizer, useful for biologically reactivating the soil. This commitment reflects our mission to respect and renew the Earth in order to ensure a greener and more sustainable future for future generations.”

Expansion to other sectors:

The olive oil chain is the first step in Tersan Puglia's “Circular Supply Chains” project, which is being expanded to also include the wine, fresh food, and pasta sectors, with the aim of engaging partners and companies from various supply chains in organized and joint pathways for regenerative agriculture, which is also capable of raising land productivity.

The support goes beyond mere production, but also includes consulting and assistance to achieve sustainability goals. During the implementation of the project, Tersan Puglia accompanies participating companies with a range of services aimed at improving the environmental impact of their activities.

Among these services are:

Supporting a dedicated path to improve the carbon footprint of individual agricultural activities. Thus, the sustainable value chain is fed by enhancing the biological fertility and productivity of soils.

During the project launch event, which was held at Tersan Puglia headquarters, a workshop entitled “Sustainable Olive Farming” was organized.
