Expanding domestic soybean crush capacity in the United States is fundamentally altering the processing landscape, driven largely by the surging demand for soybean oil in the renewable fuels sector. According to data and insights from Clean Fuels Alliance America, this shift is keeping more value within the U.S. while catering to a growing green energy market.

Kurt Kovarik, Vice President of Federal Affairs at Clean Fuels Alliance America, told the Agribusiness Report that recent biofuel policy has catalyzed significant investments in both new and expanded crush facilities. He pointed to specific projects in states like Wisconsin and Illinois, and noted new logistics routes, such as soybean oil shipments moving from the Midwest to the West Coast.

Kovarik noted that the industry has seen a dramatic structural reversal. Historically, the U.S. crushed roughly 40% of its soybean crop and exported 60% as raw beans. Current assessments indicate that the industry has pivoted to crushing approximately 65% domestically, with exports accounting for the remaining 35% of the total crop.

This transition benefits multiple sectors of the economy. Increased domestic processing retains additional value within the United States, providing essential feedstock for renewable diesel while simultaneously producing soybean meal for livestock feeding and global export markets.

However, the pace of future expansion remains tied to several critical variables: biofuel demand, crush margins, international export competition, and regulatory certainty. Kovarik emphasized that a stable Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) policy is vital for companies considering large-scale capital investments in processing and fuel production.
