Ukraine remains the world's largest exporter of sunflower oil, even as Russia actively expands its processing capacity and seeks to displace Ukrainian producers from their traditional markets. Russia has already partly capitalised on the situation that developed after the start of the full-scale war and gained a foothold in the Indian market, where Ukraine had been the leading supplier. The picture is similar in the Turkish and Italian markets, where Russia is significantly strengthening its presence.

At the same time, Ukraine's sunflower processing industry remains critically dependent on exports, given that domestic consumption does not exceed 300,000 tonnes. Despite export potential of up to six million tonnes of oil a year, shipment volumes in recent years have not reached five million tonnes because of logistical and production constraints. The top three global sunflower oil export leaders are Ukraine (33%), Russia (30%) and Argentina (14%). Ukrainian oil continues to occupy the premium price segment, and rapeseed oil exports from Ukraine are growing rapidly. Oilseed production in Ukraine is also expected to rise next season.
