The cost of olive oil in the United Kingdom has more than doubled since the cost of living crisis began in 2021, according to an analysis cited by The Independent. The 116% surge makes olive oil the sharpest riser among a basket of everyday groceries tracked by the paper, underscoring the strain that climate-related supply disruptions and rising energy costs are placing on household budgets.

Other staples recorded steep gains over the same period. Beef rose 61.3%, eggs climbed 56.7%, pasta advanced 54.9%, chocolate increased 51.2%, and milk gained 45.8%, according to figures reviewed by The Independent. The Office for National Statistics reported that cumulative inflation across the basket reached 28%.

Laura Suter, director of personal finance at investment platform AJ Bell, attributed the particularly steep rise in olive oil to a confluence of supply and cost pressures. 'Prices for the oil peaked higher than this, thanks to a combination of poor harvests and higher energy costs, before dropping back again,' she told the publication.

The pressure on household budgets is being compounded by a broader reacceleration of inflation. Headline inflation reached 2.9% in the most recent reading, up from 2.6% in June, with official figures attributing the increase to higher energy costs linked to conflict in the Middle East.

The Independent reported that poor harvests and elevated energy costs have been the primary drivers, while drought conditions across Europe and record temperatures in the UK and the wider continent are expected to continue weighing on food production and prices. These strains on farming conditions have also fed into higher prices for staples such as eggs, milk, and beef.

'It's been a rollercoaster ride for prices since the cost of living crunch began five years ago,' Suter added. 'When we dig into the basket of goods that makes up the Consumer Price Index, just 14 of the 192 categories are cheaper now than in July 2021, signalling just how widespread the cost rises have been.'

For consumers, the cumulative impact can be especially difficult to manage, as many of the affected items are purchased regularly. Industry observers suggest that switching product brands, comparing prices across supermarkets, and watching for promotions can help ease the pressure, particularly for higher-value categories such as oils, meat, dairy, and packaged staples.
