Ukrainian environmental authorities reported that a Russian missile attack on the coastal city of Chornomorsk destroyed vital infrastructure at the commercial port, including a massive sunflower oil tank, causing a widespread spill in the harbor waters. According to the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern District, the attack ignited a massive fire that completely destroyed the tank, which had a capacity of approximately 6,000 tons.
Environmental inspectors observed a giant oil slick stretching approximately 400 meters long and 200 meters wide on the water's surface, turning the water a distinct yellow in the contaminated area. Port emergency teams responded quickly by deploying floating containment booms and closing storm drain systems to prevent further spread of the oil into the open marine environment.
Although edible oil (such as sunflower oil) is less directly toxic than crude oil, Greenpeace and experts have warned of serious and long-term risks to birds and marine life in the area. The oil coats birds' feathers, preventing them from flying and destroying their natural thermal insulation, which can lead to their death due to hypothermia. Laboratories are currently analyzing water samples to accurately assess the environmental and financial damage.
