Scientists at the All-Russian Research Institute of Oil Crops have developed a high-stearin sunflower hybrid called "Stearin," which is distinguished by an elevated stearic acid content in its oil, making it a suitable substitute for palm oil in the food and cosmetics industries. The hybrid offers several advantages, including high yields, an elevated oil content, and genetic resistance to pests and diseases. It also features a unique composition that eliminates the need for manual hydrogenation, though it requires spatial isolation to prevent cross-pollination. Experts believe this development could reduce Russia's dependence on palm oil imports and boost sunflower oil sales, potentially positioning Russia as a global leader in sunflower oil supply.
