Reports indicate that EFKO's deep-water vegetable oil terminal at Russia's Port of Taman may have sustained damage during a drone attack on the night of July 30. The incident targeted the port, located in the Krasnodar region, with one of the possible objectives being the facility situated in the settlement of Volna, near the main port area. Photos and videos emerging from Volna show a significant fire, though official confirmation regarding the specific extent of damage to the EFKO terminal itself remains pending.
The Krasnodar regional operational headquarters confirmed that drone debris fell on the premises of an enterprise adjacent to the port, triggering a fire and resulting in injuries to four individuals, three of whom required hospitalization. Authorities also verified a major fire at the Tamanneftegaz oil and gas terminal in the same vicinity. Separately, Ukrainian sources on social media have asserted that the EFKO terminal was also directly hit.
The EFKO terminal holds strategic importance as Russia's sole specialized deep-water facility for handling crude vegetable oils. It boasts an annual throughput capacity exceeding 3 million tons, and its operator, EFKO, ranks among Russia's largest exporters of sunflower oil. The terminal serves as a critical export hub, facilitating the loading of substantial volumes of vegetable oils onto seagoing vessels for international markets.
Should the reported damage to this crucial terminal be officially confirmed, it could lead to a temporary disruption in vegetable oil transshipment activities. This would necessitate infrastructure inspections, a thorough assessment of fire damage, and subsequent equipment repairs. Further potential risks include restrictions on vessel calls to the port and an increase in insurance costs for shipowners operating in the region.
