The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is forecasting a record-breaking canola production of 5.4 billion pounds for the 2026/27 marketing year. This surge is primarily attributed to farmers expanding their acreage to meet the escalating demand from both the food and biofuel sectors.

North Dakota, the nation's leading producer, has planted 2.33 million acres, representing a significant 29% increase from the previous year. Expanded planting is also reported in Minnesota, Montana, Washington, Oklahoma, and Kansas. However, despite the acreage growth, national yields are projected to decline by 10% to approximately 1,811 pounds per acre.

On the processing side, the USDA projects domestic canola crushing to reach 5.3 billion pounds, an 11% increase over the 2025/26 season. This growth in capacity will be further bolstered by a new crushing facility scheduled to begin operations during the marketing year.

The biofuel segment is emerging as a dominant driver, with canola oil usage for fuel production forecast to jump to 5.6 billion pounds, up from 3.7 billion pounds last year. This increase is being propelled by stronger demand for renewable fuels and the eligibility of producers for the 45Z tax credit.

Additionally, canola exports are expected to rise to 900 million pounds. Domestic consumption for food, animal feed, and other industrial applications is also on an upward trajectory, with a forecast growth of 4%.
