Patanjali Foods has officially received a directive to recall a specific batch of its cow ghee product following a declaration that the item is 'unsafe' under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The company disclosed the regulatory action in a stock exchange filing on Saturday, October 24. The recall order originated from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Madhya Pradesh, specifically through the designated officer in Burhanpur.
According to the regulatory filing, a sample from the affected batch failed to meet the rigorous requirements outlined in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. Specifically, the product failed to comply with provisions regarding contaminants, toxins, and residues, leading to its classification as unsafe for consumption.
In response to the order, Patanjali Foods clarified that the recall would not result in any material financial or operational impact on its overall business, aside from the loss of the specific batch's value. The company also informed the exchanges of its intention to contest the decision, stating that it is currently in the process of filing an appeal against the recall order.
This enforcement action coincides with a period of intensified scrutiny by Indian food safety authorities. Recently, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued a prohibition order directing Dabur India to cease selling food products carrying '100%' claims. The regulator stated that such labelling violates the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. The prohibition covered a wide range of goods, including honey, virgin coconut oil, sesame oil, and cow ghee.
Furthermore, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has launched a statewide enforcement drive against food adulteration. This crackdown has resulted in significant seizures of suspected adulterated dairy products and sweets, including butter, khoya, paneer, and ghee, as authorities seek to ensure market compliance.
