The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has reported significant authenticity and labelling issues within the olive oil market, with approximately one in three bottles tested failing to meet established standards. The findings indicate that a substantial portion of olive oils available to consumers were either blended with lower-value oils or carried misleading claims.
According to the CFIA's assessment, common misrepresentations included declarations such as 'extra virgin,' 'cold pressed,' and 'unrefined.' These findings highlight ongoing concerns about product integrity and consumer trust in the olive oil sector, underscoring the importance of robust testing and clear labelling practices.
