Shea is far more important than the simple tub of body butter on a supermarket shelf might suggest. While most consumers encounter it as a cosmetic ingredient, the chocolate industry stands as the world's largest buyer of shea. The process involves crushing, refining, and fractionating shea kernels into shea stearin—a vegetable fat utilized as a critical cocoa-butter equivalent. This allows manufacturers to effectively manage the fluctuating costs of cocoa butter in the production of chocolate, biscuits, and various other confectionery products.

This utility transforms shea into an unlikely yet strategic global commodity. It grows almost exclusively across a specific belt in West and Central Africa, where millions of collectors, the vast majority of whom are women, gather, process, and sell the nuts. However, the highest-value stages of the supply chain—industrial refining, blending, and final chocolate manufacturing—largely take place in Europe, North America, and Asia.

Nigeria's current efforts to retain more of that value within its own borders have turned this humble rural nut into a definitive test case for who truly profits from Africa's 'minor' crops. Thus far, the evidence suggests that the primary beneficiaries are not the farmers and collectors who form the backbone of the industry, but rather the international entities handling the downstream processing.
