The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) has signaled its readiness to engage in high-level discussions regarding potential oleochemical partnerships with the Philippines, aiming to capitalize on the simultaneous expansion of both the coconut and palm oil sectors.

Speaking on the sidelines of the 2026 Malaysian Palm Oil Forum, MPOC Chief Executive Officer Belvinder Sron extended an open invitation to stakeholders in the Philippine coconut oil industry. She emphasized that such collaboration represents a 'win-win situation' for both nations, particularly as coconut oil remains a critical feedstock in the production of oleochemicals.

Oleochemicals are derived from natural plant-based oils and fats and serve as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based petrochemicals. They are essential components in household staples such as detergents, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, as well as industrial applications including lubricants, plasticizers, and concrete additives. Ms. Sron highlighted that MPOC is shifting its focus further downstream, identifying oleochemicals as a key driver for future revenue growth in the palm oil sector.

As one of the world's leading producers of coconut oil, the Philippines offers significant raw material synergy. Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority shows that the country exported coconut products worth $3.6 billion in 2025, a 35.2% increase from the previous year. Coconut oil alone accounted for $2.89 billion of that revenue. Furthermore, the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service estimates that Philippine coconut oil exports could reach 1.19 million metric tons in the 2026/2027 marketing year.

Former Agriculture Secretary William D. Dar characterized the potential partnership as a 'strategic opportunity' to enhance global market access. He noted that by leveraging Malaysian technological expertise, the Philippines could modernize its domestic palm and coconut industries, attract significant investment, and improve the livelihoods of local farmers through industrial growth and self-sufficiency.

Market analysis by the IMARC Group currently values the Philippine oleochemical market at $575.7 million, with projections suggesting it could reach $906 million at a compound annual growth rate of 5.01%. Beyond industrial chemicals, Malaysia is also keen to promote palm-based wellness ingredients, such as carotene-rich red palm oil and tocotrienols.

In terms of trade volume, the Philippines remains a vital destination for Malaysian exports. Last year, the country imported 722,507 metric tons of palm oil, alongside 63,418 metric tons of oleochemicals and 18,044 metric tons of palm kernel oil.
