Iraq's Ministry of Agriculture announced on Tuesday that the country has restored its full membership in the International Olive Council (IOC), as part of official efforts to strengthen international cooperation and develop the nation's specialized agricultural sector.
In an official statement, the Ministry said the restored membership crowns sustained efforts led by its Horticulture Department to advance olive farming in Iraq. According to the statement, the Council's formal approval was announced during a meeting held in Madrid between Iraq's Ambassador to Spain, Ali Shamran, and the IOC Executive Director, Jaime Lillo.
The Ministry also indicated that Hatem Karim Al-Ghazi, Director General of the Horticulture Department, has been appointed as Iraq's representative to the Council. This role will enable the country to benefit from the Council's training programs, technical grants, and the transfer of modern technologies in olive cultivation and oil production.
The Ministry added that the move is expected to support the expansion of olive-growing areas across Iraq, raise the efficiency of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) production facilities, and bring local quality standards into closer alignment with internationally recognized benchmarks in the sector.
