Colombia is positioned to emerge as a vital alternative palm oil supplier for India as international biofuel mandates evolve and the global appetite for edible oils continues its upward trajectory. Shankar Thakkar, the national president of the All-India Edible Oil Traders Federation, has highlighted that cultivating alternative supply chains is now a critical requirement for India to safeguard its long-term edible oil security.

As dominant palm oil producers like Indonesia and Malaysia intensify the integration of palm oil into biofuel blends, the future availability of the commodity for food consumption faces potential constraints. This shift is prompting Indian market participants to proactively reduce their heavy reliance on traditional South Asian sources. Colombia, currently ranked as the world's fourth-largest palm oil producer, presents significant trade potential for India, which remains the world’s leading importer of vegetable oils.

Recent trade figures show that Colombia supplied approximately 200,000 tonnes of palm oil to India, establishing a functional foundation for deeper bilateral cooperation. According to Thakkar, expanding trade with alternative producers such as Colombia allows India to diversify its import portfolio, mitigate the risks associated with global market volatility, and reinforce the stability of its food supply chain.

To solidify these prospects, a high-level delegation of Indian edible oil traders is scheduled to visit Colombia early next year. The mission is designed to provide traders with first-hand insights into the Colombian palm oil industry, including its production capacity and export outlook. During the visit, the delegation is expected to formalize its intent by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Fedepalma, Colombia's National Federation of Oil Palm Growers, creating a structured framework for long-term institutional and commercial collaboration.
