Indonesia plans a significant increase in palm oil exports in 2025, reaching 25 million tonnes, up one million tonnes from last year, according to forecasts from analysts at German firm Oil World. The rise has been made possible by a resumption of production following a temporary decline at the start of the year.

Although exports fell by more than 5% in the first months of 2025, with a sharp drop in April in particular—shipments totalled just 1.31 million tonnes compared with 2.3 million tonnes in March—May saw a positive turnaround. Indonesia's palm oil output reached 47.8 million tonnes, allowing export activity to pick up again.

Between January and April, Indonesia exported 7.4 million tonnes of palm oil, close to the same period in 2024 (7.58 million tonnes), pointing to stable demand in international markets despite temporary production and logistical challenges.

European countries, China, India and Pakistan remain among the leading importers of Indonesian palm oil. In the first four months of 2025, 757,000 tonnes were shipped to the European Union, 865,000 tonnes to China, 718,000 tonnes to India, and 893,000 tonnes to Pakistan. Although shipments to India fell compared with last year, increased demand from China partly offset these losses.

Experts note that the recovery in exports has been helped by improved processing technologies and continued strong demand for palm oil in the food and cosmetics industries. Indonesia is also actively working to expand its export markets, notably through trade agreements with countries in Asia and Africa.
