The Indonesian Ministry of Industry is urging businesses to expand palm oil processing capabilities beyond crude oil production as the nation seeks to bolster export earnings and maximize the utility of its vast raw material reserves. The ministry is calling for intensified collaboration with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and private enterprises to accelerate the downstreaming process, aimed at generating superior economic value from the country's abundant natural resources.

Deputy Industry Minister Faisol Riza emphasized that palm oil downstreaming must become a strategic priority for Kadin, citing Indonesia's global standing as a leading producer of crude palm oil (CPO). Speaking at Kadin's 2026 National Coordination Meeting on Investment, Downstreaming, Energy, and the Environment in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, Riza stated that with all raw materials available locally, the subsector has the potential to become one of the most optimized and successful downstream industries if industry stakeholders work in unison.

Riza pointed out that Indonesia still holds significant untapped potential in developing high-value palm oil derivatives, specifically naming glycerin, surfactants, and carotene as key areas for growth. He noted that existing downstreaming successes include the advancement of the biodiesel sector, notably the B50 program, which integrates a 50% palm oil-based biodiesel blend with conventional diesel fuel.

Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman also identified downstreaming as a critical lever for strengthening Indonesia's trade position. Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) reveals that exports of CPO and its various derivatives climbed by 7.32% year-on-year during the first half of 2026, a growth trend supported by robust international CPO prices.

Minister Sulaiman argued that Indonesia should continue to enhance the added value of its agricultural commodities through advanced processing to secure greater economic benefits for the national treasury and improve the welfare of local farmers. Given its dominance as the world's largest palm oil producer, Indonesia has substantial room to grow its foreign exchange reserves by pivoting toward processed goods rather than relying on raw commodity exports. The government's long-term goal is to solidify a downstream industrial framework where export growth translates into both higher sales value and broader domestic economic stability.
