Recent data from the European Commission reveals a continuing downward trend in palm oil imports across major European Union member states for the period spanning 1 July to 18 October. This contraction is largely attributed to the implementation of national policies that exclude palm oil-based biofuels from quota obligations, reflecting the bloc's shifting energy priorities.

The Netherlands maintains its position as the primary gateway for European palm oil trade, recording approximately 302,000 tonnes. As a central hub, it remains a critical site for both distribution and biofuel manufacturing. In contrast, Italy, the second-largest importer, saw a significant 29% drop, with volumes falling to just under 196,000 tonnes. Spain's import volume remained relatively constant, hovering slightly above 115,000 tonnes.

The decline was also evident in Northern and Central Europe. Germany reduced its intake by 5% year-on-year, importing around 70,600 tonnes. Belgium and Denmark experienced even steeper falls; Belgian imports plummeted by 40% to 22,800 tonnes, while Denmark saw a 34% reduction to 11,560 tonnes. Conversely, some nations bucked the trend. Greece significantly increased its imports to 33,000 tonnes, with France and Sweden also recording notably higher volumes during the same timeframe.
