Osaka City University Advances Coconut Oil-Based Jet Fuel for Lower Aviation Emissions

Researchers at Osaka City University have unveiled a new method for converting coconut oil into a biofuel suitable for blending with standard Jet A-1 aviation fuel, as the aviation sector faces mounting pressure to reduce its environmental footprint and explore sustainable alternatives.

The new process requires less energy to produce and generates lower hydrocarbon emissions compared with conventional approaches. According to the research team, the resulting biofuel blends were tested on a small turbojet engine and confirmed to function effectively.

The team used two production pathways to generate the biofuel components. The first produced fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) from methanol, while the second yielded fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) from ethanol. The researchers observed that fuel consumption rose as the proportion of biofuel in the blend increased. Even so, the mixtures were able to run in existing gas turbine engines without any major loss of efficiency or performance, and without adding to overall emissions.

'Our testing showed the fuel blend is compatible with current gas turbine engines, delivering solid performance and efficiency while holding emissions steady,' the research team stated.

An additional benefit emerged when the coconut-derived fuel was combined with Jet A-1: hydrocarbon emissions went down, potentially reducing the volume of pollutants released into the atmosphere. The feedstock also presents a compelling supply opportunity, as roughly 30 percent of harvested coconuts are discarded for failing to meet commercial standards, providing an abundant and underutilized raw material for this kind of fuel.

Looking ahead, the researchers aim to improve fuel economy and develop technologies that would allow engines to operate entirely on 100 percent biofuel. The work points to a promising route for reducing the aviation industry's reliance on fossil fuels and could contribute meaningfully to global efforts to lower greenhouse-gas emissions and promote more sustainable aviation practices.
