A unit of US grain trader Cargill will build a corn ethanol plant next to its sugarcane facility in Goiás state in central-western Brazil, the company announced on Friday.
Agribusiness website AgFeed first reported the news. Cargill later confirmed the investment decision but declined to disclose further details about the project.
Cargill already produces ethanol from sugarcane and corn in Goiás. It operates in the sector through its Brazilian biofuel subsidiary, Cargill Bioenergia.
The new plant represents another step by Cargill to strengthen its biofuel production in Brazil, a global powerhouse in grain production.
In February, Cargill agreed to acquire a 50% stake in SJC Bioenergia, giving it control of the company’s assets in Quirinópolis and Cachoeira Dourada, both located in Goiás.
