AAK, the oils and fats specialist, has announced the first commercial deployment of its patented dry-fractionation technology at NURA Speciality Oils & Fats, its joint venture with Kuala Lumpur Kepong (KLK) in Malaysia.

The technology will be used to produce specialty palm-mid fractions (PMFs), a key ingredient in high-quality cocoa-butter equivalents (CBEs) widely used in chocolate and confectionery manufacturing. PMFs are critical for delivering the texture, melting profile, and mouthfeel that consumers expect from premium chocolate products.

The new process complements AAK's existing fractionation capabilities and is designed to deliver multiple operational advantages. According to the company, the technology creates opportunities to reduce both the initial capital investment required for new capacity and ongoing operating costs. Importantly, it also lowers CO₂e emissions while maintaining the high-quality standards demanded by specialty fats customers.

Jeppe Hjorth, Head of Process Development at AAK, described the rollout as a significant milestone. 'Taking this technology from research to commercial production is an important milestone for AAK. It demonstrates how long-term innovation, combined with close collaboration across functions, can create new opportunities for more efficient and sustainable production. NURA is the first deployment, and we see strong potential for the technology going forward,' he said.

NURA serves as the launch site for the technology, with AAK indicating strong potential to extend the process to additional facilities as it seeks to strengthen its position in the global specialty fats market.
