The European Commission has authorised a genetically modified (GM) soybean variety for use in food and animal feed.

The decision follows a scientific assessment by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which concluded that the GM variety is as safe as its conventional counterpart.

According to the Commission, this GM soybean underwent comprehensive and rigorous evaluation procedures to ensure a high level of protection for human health, animal health and the environment.

The Commission clarified that the decision only permits the import of this soybean variety for use in food and animal feed, not for cultivation within the European Union.

The authorisation is valid for 10 years, and all products made from this GM soybean will be subject to the EU's strict labelling and traceability rules.

The Commission was legally required to make a decision on the authorisation after member states failed to reach a qualified majority either for or against it.

Genetically Modified Organisms

The Commission explained that it has recently become possible to modify the genetic makeup of cells and living organisms using modern biotechnology techniques known as "gene technology".

Genetic material is artificially modified to confer new traits, such as resistance to disease, insects or drought, tolerance to herbicides, improved food quality or nutritional value, or increased yield.

Such organisms are known as "genetically modified organisms (GMOs)".

Food and feed that contain, consist of, or are produced from these organisms are referred to as "genetically modified food or feed".
