Malaysia’s Ministry of Plantations and Commodities has called for a halt to the import and sale of products carrying discriminatory labels against palm oil. The ministry confirmed that the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living will no longer tolerate activities related to such products.

In a statement issued on January 2, 2025, the ministry said: “Strict action will be taken under existing regulations against any party found involved along the product supply chain. The Ministry of Plantations and Commodities will continue to give strong support and cooperate with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living in efforts to combat discriminatory labeling against palm oil.”

The ministry noted that some establishments are still selling products with discriminatory labels against palm oil, despite the regulations banning such labeling coming into force under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 on March 15, 2022.

The ministry added that the two-year grace period should have been sufficient for the parties concerned to take appropriate steps, including voluntarily removing products carrying discriminatory labels against palm oil from shelves.

It said 1,024 days had passed since the regulations were first introduced, during which the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living carried out thousands of inspections nationwide and found that some establishments were still selling products with discriminatory labels against palm oil.
