Spain's government has approved a royal decree updating regulations and strengthening transparency in the olive oil industry, according to Olive Oil Times.

The report, published on 25 August, said the decree—proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA)—would introduce significant changes to reporting obligations, data collection practices and compliance structures affecting producers, processors and operators across all stages of the olive oil supply chain.

Olive Oil Times reported that a key part of the decree would involve reforming the Olive Oil Market Information System (SIMO), which is jointly managed by the ministry and Spain's autonomous regions.

Under the revised SIMO framework, olive mills will be required to submit annual declarations of production volumes by category—extra virgin, virgin and "lampante".

According to the report, officials believe this measure will improve traceability, as these declarations will need to be submitted before the olive oil can be put up for sale.

MAPA is also introducing stricter oversight mechanisms, enhanced traceability requirements and new quality-control standards to ensure that olive oil labelled "extra virgin" or "pure" meets the required standards, Olive Oil Times reported.
