In a significant advancement for climate-resilient agriculture and farm productivity, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Oilseeds Research (ICAR-IIOR), Hyderabad, has developed and demonstrated an innovative biopolymer-based Smart Seed Coating Technology. This patented innovation is designed to enhance seed quality, ensure robust crop establishment, and provide a defense against biotic and abiotic stresses across a diverse spectrum of agricultural crops.
As global agriculture grapples with erratic rainfall, soil degradation, and emerging pests, the performance of the seed—the primary carrier of agricultural technology—has become paramount. The ICAR-IIOR technology utilizes biodegradable biopolymeric materials to create a multifunctional protective layer. This coating serves as a sophisticated delivery system, carrying beneficial microorganisms, nutrients, and crop protection agents directly to the seed-soil interface. This microenvironment facilitates rapid germination and vigorous root development, critical for survival during early growth stages.
Field demonstrations have yielded impressive results. In Telangana, groundnut and soybean crops recorded yield improvements of approximately 30% compared to conventional farming practices. Furthermore, multi-location AICRP-Seed trials involving soybean, maize, groundnut, cotton, and mustard demonstrated consistent productivity gains ranging from 12% to 37% over untreated controls. These figures highlight the potential of biopolymer-based multilayer seed treatments as a scalable solution for diverse cropping systems.
The technology is particularly vital for rainfed agriculture, which remains highly vulnerable to moisture stress and temperature extremes. By protecting seedlings during their most susceptible phase, smart seed technologies reduce production risks and stabilize output. Unlike single-purpose conventional treatments, this platform integrates multiple beneficial inputs into one application, adaptable for cereals, pulses, oilseeds, and horticultural crops.
To facilitate large-scale adoption, ICAR-IIOR is actively promoting partnerships with both public and private seed sectors. Stakeholders such as the National Seed Corporation, State Seed Development Corporations, and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are identified as pivotal players in integrating these smart seeds into national distribution networks. This collaborative approach aims to align agricultural innovation with national priorities of resource-use efficiency and economic security for farmers.
Moving forward, ICAR-IIOR continues to focus on next-generation seed enhancements involving beneficial microbes and sustainable formulations. The widespread implementation of such technologies is expected to transform conventional seeds into climate-resilient assets, strengthening India's seed systems and improving the livelihoods of millions of farmers.
